Hi Lonny. I work in a cancer center and treat many cancer patients, both survivors and those undergoing tx. I have several breast cancer patients, all of whom have chronic blocks between the Yin channels d/t location and scars. I have a question about 1 patient in particular: she had a D flap reconstruction, (where they use abdominal fat to create a breast), and I just cannot keep her 4/5 block open. I usually do other points on the affected channels as well as Ren 17, after opening the block and have started retaining the needles on Kd 22 and P2, instead of insert and remove. I'm wondering if the "created breast" might be interfering and any other suggestions you have for treatment, (just acupuncture, not herbs yet). And in general what type of points you like to use after opening a block(s), to help keep the block open. Thank you!

Hi Holly,

The D flap construction is, I think, the best because it doesnt involve putting in plastics or removing muscle in the buttocks or thigh etc. But it is an intensive procedure requiring 8-10 hours of surgery to hook up the circulation to the tissue. And, that means 8-10 of general anesthesia.

The upside is that the constructed breast looks and feels real because it is all the women's flesh, fat, and blood. You grow, it grows, you lose weight it grows smaller etc.. Also, assuming the graft "takes" it's not going to fail whereas silicone and saline have a significant failure rate.

The downside is 1. The intense nature of the surgery, 2. All the normal anatomical relations are compromised (of course this true with mastectomy and the other methods of reconstruction.)

So yes, the yin E/E blocks can all be manifested due to lack of proper flow through the internal channels in the chest.

On a physical level there isnt much you can do other hen to pay attention to that block now and then. I wouldn't keep going after it in every session though. This is where herbs that move blood in the chest could come in very handy. A question is "to what degree doe the patient evidence subtle aspects (psych soul) of the Kidney/Heart Protector E/E block? IE-Fear of intimacy, repression of tender feelings, etc???? I other words, is this most significantly structural or are there subtle aspects that might need to be addressed?

Thank you, Lonny, very helpful. This patient is making tremendous transformations. She works f/t and has a 5 yr old daughter and supportive husband. She suffers from insomnia and was over exercising, d/t lack of time and real energy she has given her full life. She has made significant changes in her exercise routine, (I had to do AE on her many times until she really got that she needed to stop running). I believe she's an Earth CF, Water within, worry then fear her primary emotions.

So to answer your question, I think this is both structural and emotional, tho she is making progress on the emotional aspect. I have many patients with chronic blocks. Do you often recommend not continuing to go after them? And do you do any additional/different tx to help them stay open besides the usual E/E pts? Thank you!

I just mean dont do it every treatment.....Do it periodically......But give support in that direction through reframing. Also here due to issues of the surgery Blood Moving herbs are really important and acupuncture can break the block temporarily "energetically" but herbs actually remove the obstruction.
